Driver's License or State Identification

• A driver's license or state identification card is ideal proof of identity. Because these identification cards are issued by your state's motor vehicle office, you can use the identification number to locate a buyer if problems should arise after the sale. If accepting either of these forms of identification, write down all information from the card, including the driver's license or state identification number. Ask your buyer if his address is correct, as people who move may not update their address with a state motor vehicle office.
  
  

Passport

• A passport is issued by the United States Department of State and is a valid form of identification. Copy all information from the passport for proof of identity. Make sure the picture matches your buyer and that the passport is not expired, as passports list the date of issue and expiration date. Passports have a unique code; copy it down. Also ask if the buyer's passport address is correct. If not, write the buyer's correct address on your paperwork.
  
  

Military Identification

• If your buyer is active military, you may also accept a military identification card. Military identification cards do not list an address, so you'll have to ask for your buyer's address. Check the expiration date on the military identification card to ensure the information is up-to-date and valid. Ensure that the picture on the identification card matches the person buying your car. Write down any information you find on the card, including rank and division.
  
  

Other Information You Might Gather

• You might want to ask for proof of address to supplement an identification card. Ask for an insurance card or other piece of mail to validate the buyer's address. Be sure to obtain your buyer's telephone number, as well. If you do run into problems after the sale, you may be able to contact the buyer. If your buyer doesn't transfer ownership after you sell your car, you become liable for tickets or accidents as the last known owner.
