Helping Your Toddler Pick A Halloween Costume

105 12
It just might be the biggest decision your toddler will be making this year. Picking a Halloween costume. For some tots the process is fairly simple. If your toddler watches Elmo all day long, sings Elmo songs non stop and asks you to please call him Elmo, the choice is fairly obvious. Get the kid the Elmo costume. However, if your toddler can't make up his mind on small decisions, such as what he would like for lunch today, you are in for big trouble!

The first rule to keep in mind is to let your toddler make the decision early enough so he has time to change his mind. And then change it again. Say he firmly decides to be a policeman. Do not order it yet, let him sleep on it. If the next morning your toddler wakes up and arrests you while you are still sleeping, then go ahead and order the policeman costume. However, your toddler may wake you up with the news that today he is a Navy SEAL. Again, let him sleep on it. The next day he may be a garbage collector. You will want to start this process today, as in August. That will give you 2 and half months to get it right.

The second rule, and this applies to girls only, is to dress her up as a princess. Banish the thought of suggesting any other ideas. Fortunately, there are an incredible amount of girls toddler Halloween costumes that fit the requirement. You may want to check if there are any non-princess toddler costumes, just for your own interest.

Lastly, know your child. If your kid likes to follow the crowd you have better find out what everyone else is wearing. If his best friend decides on an Eli Manning football costume and you got him Winnie the Pooh, prepare to make switches or tolerate a meltdown.

For all you parents out there who are horrified at the thought of letting your little toddler decide what he dresses up as, go ahead and order what catches your fancy. However, you may want to start convincing him today why Ninja is the perfect costume. Some ideas you could try are:

-Daddy dressed up as Ninja every year until he was 15.

-Ninja saves the world every day (stretching the truth a bit may be necessary).

-Ninja is going to cry if you don't wear this because he was so excited to hear that Johnny is wearing him this year. He's been looking forward to it. Ninja loves Johnny. See - Daddy is trying to wear Ninja but it doesn't fit because Ninja only wants Johnny to be Ninja.

You have my sympathy and good wishes. I hope it works.
