When teaching concepts about counting, it is extremely important to keep it concrete. All too often, we count without making reference to objects. Counting in this fashion is really just rote (commit to memory) learning. For the child it is a sequence to remember without understanding the principles of counting. These worksheets help to provide some reference to what the numbers relate to.

A number line shows what comes before and after a number. They also give a sense of how many as each tick on the number line represents one. Numberlines provide great visuals for number amounts and number sequences. These five worksheets focus on counting to 10 but starting an any point. Another classic mistake we often make when working with young children is that we always start at one. Begin a various numbers, not just one. The number lines here begin at zero, or at four or at two, this supports learning to count beyond just rote counting.

Another way to support counting with numberlines is to have strips of paper and let students create their own number lines. However, start from where the child is. If they can count to twenty, expand your number lines. Children can also use numberlines for skip counting (2,4,6,8 or 5, 10, 15, 20 or 10, 20, 30, 40) which helps them see the patterns quickly. When just beginning on counting concepts, always point to each number to provide the child with one to one correspondence with number and quantity.

Once the child has experiences with number lines and is beginning to focus on the concept of one hundred. The next logical step from the number line would be to move into the hundred's charts. However, the hundreds chart should only be introduced once a child is able to count by one's, to twenty and is beginning to count by ten's to one hundred. The idea of teaching counting is to start from where they are and move to the next logical step. When a child is fluent from one to ten, it's time to count to twenty, counting onward from various numbers and counting backwards from various numbers. When a child has a solid understanding of counting to twenty with objects, numbers, numberlines and with the written symbol, the next step is to begin to count to fifty and one hundred. Learning to count takes time, often up to two years. Be patient and the concept will come.
