    Yard Art

    • Yard art silhouettes are the most common plywood silhouettes. These are made with a jig or scroll saw and 1/2-inch or thicker plywood sheets. Yard art silhouettes are normally full-sized figures cut out of the plywood sheet and painted black. Many patterns are available on line for these silhouettes or pictures can be blown up to create a pattern.

    Wall Art

    • Plywood is used to create a wide array of wall art silhouettes with 1/4- to 1/2-inch plywood. This type of silhouette is typically six inches or smaller and is quite detailed. Wall art silhouettes are created in the same way as yard art silhouettes; however, they often contain entire scenes instead of one object. A scroll saw is used to cut out the fine details.

    Frames

    • Silhouette frames or reverse silhouettes are becoming more popular as decorations for homes and offices. With these silhouettes, the cut-out portion is the discarded piece and the plywood from which the object was cut is used as art. These can be as simple as large cutouts of utensils or as complicated as a person's profile. Scroll saws are also used to create these silhouettes. The saw allows you to cut the board from a point in the center without disturbing the outer edges.

    Ornaments

    • A silhouette ornament makes for a wonderful personalized Christmas tree ornament. These ornaments are created by taking a profile picture of a loved one and tracing the profile onto a small 1/4-inch piece of plywood. The profile is cut out and a small hole is drilled through the top of the ornament for the hanger. These ornaments can be painted any color and the name of the loved one or the year can also be added for keepsake purposes.

    Cork Boards

    • Cork board silhouettes can be made in any size. These silhouettes are created like the wall or yard art silhouettes with the addition of a thin layer of cork over the silhouette cut to the shape. The cork is glued to the silhouette to create a bulletin board in any shape imaginable.
