GSN Renews Current Hits, Announces New Games
GSN has been having great success recently. 2013 was their "most-watched" year, and 2014 is shaping to to exceed those numbers. They're appealing to new and important demographics while keeping their regular audience, which is great news for fans of the network.
At GSN's upfront presentation in March 2014, current favorites have been renewed while new shows, both greenlit and under consideration, were announced.
Renewed Programming
A few shows were officially renewed at the presentation, though others could follow suit later in the season. American Bible Challenge will be back, as will GSN's breakaway hit The Chase. In fact, The Beast and Brooke Burns were both on hand at the Upfront. It Takes a Church will also continue.
Other shows that could still return include Minute to Win It and Mind of a Man.
Greenlit Shows
One show that is moving forward is called Skin Wars. This one will be hosted by Rebecca Romijn, and is really more of a reality show than a game show. It's based on body painting, with teams competing to impress judges. Eight episodes have been filmed and will air in 2014.
The other greenlit show, which was officially announced at the upfronts, is called Idiot Test. It's based on a popular app, and challenges two pairs of rivals to answer trivia questions based on distinct subjects, such as Star Wars films or 1990s grunge music. The show will be hosted by Ben Gleib. 40 episodes of Idiot Test have been ordered, though no premiere date has been set.
Pilots Ordered
Pilot episodes have been ordered, meaning that the network is seriously considering these shows but wants to see what they might look like, for a couple of titles.
App Wars is just what it sounds like: a riff on Shark Tank but for app developers. Each episode will feature five contestants who have created what they feel will be the "next big thing" in apps. They will pitch their apps to the judges who will then decide whether or not to invest their time in building the apps. The judges then serve as mentors for the top three contestants, and one is given a cash prize at the end.
Say What? is based on the kids' game Telephone - you know the one where you make up a sentence and then whisper it to the person beside you, who then whispers it to the next person and so on, until the sentence ends up mangled beyond belief? Of course this show is based on a Japanese version of the game, so things will get a little crazy. Contestants will end up using everything from art supplies to musical instruments to pass along their phrases. This actually looks like a lot of fun.
In Development
Finally, there are a few shows that are in development, which means that GSN is considering them but they may never see the light of day. (For comparison, take a look at 2013's GSN Upfront to see how many of these shows actually went to production.)
The Tunnel - The Tunnel (which is a working title) challenges contestants to answer trivia questions in order to move themselves forward in a darkened tunnel. At the same time they have to try to figure out where their opponents are and attempt to block those opponents. Whoever gets out of his or her tunnel first, wins.
Heavy Betters - Take The Biggest Loser without the trainers and combine it with gambling, then locate it in the workplace. That's what you get with Heavy Betters. Two teams of co-workers place "diet bets" and then compete to see which team can lose the most weight. In the end the winning team gets a cash prize.
The Line - This game show will travel around the country, where potential contestants will attempt to get to the front of the line for a chance to win the jackpot. While the jackpot itself appears to be the prize, the game actually takes place in the line (hence the name, of course) as contestants are offered opportunities to move up or face elimination.
Star-Crossed Lovers - It's a dating show with a celebrity panel. That's really all there is to say about this one.
With several reliable ratings-getters already in the lineup, GSN now has to make sure that their new offerings are up to the same standards as shows like The Chase and American Bible Challenge. All we can do is wait and see whether any of these shows will become hits, but I certainly hope that GSN will continue to gain viewers. And also, I'd really like to see Grand Slam make a comeback. How about it, GSN?
