Creating Your Sewing Space - Five Elements to Consider

103 11
One of the most essential steps to sewing is creating a space designated just for sewing.
Trust me, there is nothing more frustrating than wanting to sew or to be in the middle of a project and unable to locate the tool or notion that you're looking for.
It doesn't matter if you're returning to the world or sewing or if you are a newbie, you will want a well organized and comfortable place to sew.
I have included a few tips that you should keep in mind when creating your sewing space.
I realize that not everyone has a spare room, basement, or attic space that they can turn into a sewing room.
If you do that is awesome.
But for those of you who do not, no worries.
Element One Designate an area for sewing.
Keep in mind that your designated space does not have to be a large area.
It only has to be large enough to comfortably accommodate you, your sewing machine; the items listed in your sewing kit, and the items needed for your project.
If you are unable to locate a space that you can designate as your "sewing area", find a corner or even a spacious closet in your home.
In this instance all you pretty much have to do is set up a sturdy small folding table where you can set up all of your essentials.
It makes no difference if you are using a desk or the dinning room table to sew on, make sure that your work table is a sturdy one.
A standard folding card table may not be a sufficient foundation.
A non sturdy table tends to shake when the sewing machine is in use.
This shaking tends to cause the machine to vibrate, which can cause many broken needles.
But more importantly the vibration is not good for the machine.
Whether your sewing machine is left out on a desk or stored away, make sure your sewing machine has a cover.
This additional care will prevent your machine from acquiring a build up of lint and dirt.
Element Two Regardless if you have a portable place to sew or an actual room, make sure to organize your essentials in plastic bins and containers of all sizes and configurations.
Be sure that each container is clearly labeled so that it is easy for you to determine what is being stored in each container or bin.
Organizing your supplies this way makes them easy to store under a bed or in a cupboard or closet.
I also suggest that you store your sewing kit in its on plastic container with a different color lid (making it easily recognizable) so that you quickly take it out before each sewing session.
Element Three Another critical element to consider for your sewing area is lighting.
Natural lighting is the best and if is at all possible, situate your designated sewing area near a window.
I assume that you will sneak in some evening and or nighttime sewing so make sure that you have sufficient overhead and task lighting in your sewing area.
Trust me on this one, there is nothing worse than trying to thread a needle in dim lighting.
Furthermore, sewing in dim lighting can be strenuous on your eyes which can sometimes lead to headaches and fatigue.
Element Four Another important element that you must consider for your sewing area is a table or surface to cut your fabric on.
A dinning room table can be used or even a hardwood floor.
Keep in mind that your surface should be smooth and flat.
To protect your table or floor from marks and punctures purchase a cardboard pattern sewing cutting board.
You simply place your board on top of your surface before you begin pining and cutting your fabric.
Element Five Although listed last but certainly not least is the ironing station.
All seasoned seamstresses and designers know that ironing can transform a homemade looking project into a professional looking one.
So make sure that your ironing board and iron are nearby when working on your project.
