How to Take a Mug Shot

Instructions

1

Decide what look you're going for. What image do you want to project--the crazed drunk, spaced out debutante, tough thug, conscientious objector or befuddled character. Choose based on how you plan to plead, what defense you want to use and whether you prefer jail or rehab.
2

Play the part of the crazed drunk. Many classic celebrity mug shots feature people looking as though they were dragged through a gutter and force-fed vodka immediately before the photo was snapped. Mess up your hair, ensuring that greasy-looking pieces point in every direction. Unbutton your shirt and re-button it so the buttons don't match the holes. Slacken your jaw and get a crazy gleam in your eye as the photo is taken.
3

Act like a spaced out debutante. Even if you weren't arrested for crashing your luxury car after a night out at the trendiest club in town, you can still manage to pull off the debutante look. Find a reflective surface and fix your hair. Wipe away mascara tracks from your tear-stained cheeks and beg for the chance to gloss your lips. Smile brilliantly for the camera.
4

Show your tough side and take a mug shot that ups your street credibility. Look stoic or even pleased that you've been arrested because they have nothing on you. Sneer at the cop behind the camera and ask for a copy of the picture for your scrapbook.
5

Stand up for your principles. Take a page out of Steve McQueen's book and take a mug shot that looks cool. Maintain your dignity and flash a peace sign. Act cooperative, like you are only mildly inconvenienced.
6

Convey your most bumbling charm. No one will hold your arrest against you if you personably owns up to your crime. Stand in front of the camera looking slightly embarrassed and uncomfortable. Book an immediate appearance on "The Tonight Show" to atone for your sins.
7

Release your mug shot to the press.
