How to Make a Long-Distance Call From a Home Phone
- 1). Check your bill or call the customer service line to verify that your telephone plan includes long-distance service.
- 2). Pick up the receiver of your corded phone or turn on your cordless phone and listen for the dial tone.
- 3). Dial 1, the three-digit area code and the seven-digit phone number. Listen for the sound of the phone ringing on the other end.
- 1). Pick up the receiver and listen for a dial tone. Dial "0" to call collect.
- 2). Listen for recorded instructions about making a collect call.
- 3). Clearly speak your name into the phone, when prompted.
- 4). Inform the operator that you would like to make a collect call, if a person picks up, and listen to her instructions.
- 1). Use a prepaid calling card, which can be purchased from a convenience or drug store.
- 2). Read the instructions on the back of the card and scratch off to reveal the PIN number, if there is one.
- 3). Pick up the receiver of your home phone, listen for a dial tone and dial the number (usually an 800 number) to the card service.
