Many people believe that a party planner's job is a walk in the park - seemingly including just contacting some potential clients and having a party with them. The reality of successful party planning is a much more serious, and an extremely taxing, process of choosing the right customers for the right product, in the right atmosphere, using the right marketing speak. Not only that, but the party has to be a party, rather than a lecture or a promotion exercise.

Bearing this in mind, can anyone be a successful make-up party planner? The short answer is no. A party planner must have certain character traits and a plethora of skills that can be efficiently utilized for the ultimate goal of selling make-up products. Good organization skills is a must have in this business throughout the whole process as the host will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the party. This means predicting any potential conflicts and problems and avoiding them before they arise. A make-up party can very quickly revert back to just a party if there is no direction or it is taken off course.

The invitations to make-up parties especially require good negotiation and sales skills as different styles of invitations will be needed for different people. There are some people that like to wear make-up on every possible occasion and these people will not require persuasion to come to the make-up party, but they will need to be given a mental image of a social event that will be fun, amusing and entertaining, possibly like previous make-up parties that they have been to. Alternatively, there are people that avoid ever using make up and these people need to be accounted for in a totally different way. They need to be advised on the benefits of make-up, the advantages of changing their lifestyle and the usefulness of attending a make-up party to realize those advantages.

Just as with all areas of marketing, there are techniques that work without much effort and others that do not no matter how hard you try. A successful make-up party planner is able to organize and manage the schedule, process and marketing methods used during a make-up party in order to keep the party under control and steer the participants towards the final goal of purchasing products. Although this planning helps keep everything in check, it sometimes helps to have a little silliness to soften the atmosphere.

In the end a good make-up party planner must have a bubbly, social, good humored personality and they must have the ability to get on well with people and form friendships easily. Confidence is a must as in any sales position, but any over-confidence can actually have detrimental effects on your potential relationships so you must be humble enough to accept criticism also, and know when to back down.
