How to Replace File Name of Photos Using Photoshop

103 14
When you transfer or upload your photos coming from a digital camera, you will notice that the file names are made up of letters and numbers.
At first, this may not be bothersome for most of us since we can always rename them.
However, making the file names more descriptive can be really helpful.
For instance, you want to upload your photos to your social network account or you want to share them to your friends.
It can be problematic if you have to open each file just to check which among them should be shared.
This is why it is a good idea to replace file name so that you can save yourself from the tedious job of opening the files one by one.
If you have a ton of photos that you have to rename, you can use Photoshop, which is known as one of the best photo editors around.
However, this can also be used to rename picture files.
Built in file renaming is a function provided by the said tool so that you can edit or replace file name of your photos with just a few steps.
The first thing that you have to do is to identify the photos that you would like to rename.
Typically, you may have stored the pictures in a single folder where all the photos reside.
Once you have identified the images that you need to rename, you can specify the event or the title that you would like to give the photos.
For instance, you can have Birthday for the files that were taken during your special day.
The process of renaming more than one file at a time is called batch renaming which is quite useful for digital camera owners who often transfer their photos to their PCs.
Now that you have the general idea of what your files will be called, you can start Photoshop if it is still not open.
Then, click on File then go to "Process Multiple Files...
" Right after that, a dialog box will appear which is quite huge and daunting with all the options it provides.
There is no need to worry though because we can always ignore most of them and only modify a few parts.
In the dialog box, you will find the option where the files will be obtained including the folder and destination paths.
Under File Naming, there is a checkbox for Rename Files where you can specify the Document Name and the 3 digit serial number.
There are added features here including file conversion and image resizing.
Apart from renaming the files in a certain folder, you can also import files from your camera or from another folder, replace file name of opened picture files or use the file browser to manually select the files to be renamed.
The built in file renaming utility from Photoshop is an excellent tool if you want to save time and effort by automatically changing the names of the files through the dialog box.
However, it is important to note that this function is only usable if you would like to rename picture files and not word processing files.
