How Memory Foam Is Made?

Memory foam is also known as visco-elastic polyurethane foam.
It was developed by NASA in the 1960s with its original purpose to protect astronauts when they were taking off or landing.
It cushioned the astronauts during the rough landings and extreme take-offs where no other product had ever worked.
It was not intended for consumer use.
The original memory foam that was made by NASA was not suitable for daily use such as sleeping.
They only intended for the foam to be used for take off and landing instead of sleeping.
It took many years and a lot of testing before the right compounds for domestic memory foam would be perfected.
The manufacturing process is complicated and must be done correctly to produce a quality product.
Manufactures must have just the right combination of chemicals and compounds before they can produce a memory foam mattress that is suitable for bedding.
This is the reason that memory foam is more expensive than its other bedding counterparts but the price has come down as manufacturers have perfected their product.
In the 1980s this variety became popular in hospitals because it relieved pressure points.
It was not until a decade later that it became popular with consumers for home use.
The exact process for making them is kept fairly quiet it is known that manufacturers combine polyol and diisocyanate to make a reaction that causes it to bubble and expand.
Polyol is a form of alcohol that contains hydrogen oxygen and diisocyanate is a chemical mixture that contains carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.
When these compounds are mixed they are then poured into molds where they are allowed to dry.
The result is a soft, pliable foam that makes a great mattress or pillow.
Because of the structure of memory foam it reacts to the heat of the body and literally molds to the shape of the body.
Airflow is determined by the density of the foam.
A high density foam mattress will have a longer life and will perform better than a foam with low density.
Manufacturers use the process of blending the polyol and diisocyanate compounds to create memory foam that is either low density or high density.
High density foam is more comfortable and has a longer life.
It provides greater support for the body and does more for pressure relief than the cheaper low density brands.
The process for making both types of foam is the same but the low density foam contains more additives.
If you are interested in purchasing a this variety of mattress you should do some research into how each manufacturer produces their product.
You must have the right combination of each of the compounds used in the memory foam process before you can find a high quality product.
