The mid day meal scheme in Gujarat is a part of the national scheme to provide free school lunch in all Government schools. Many Gujarat NGOs have taken up the initiative to implement this scheme. The Akshaya Patra Foundation is one among them. It feeds around 4,00,158 children in 1,653 Government schools of Gujarat. Apart from implementing the mid day meal scheme in Gujarat, this Foundation also implements this programme in 8 other states. In total the Foundation feeds 1.3 million children across India every day.

Here is one of the stories of Gujarat mid day meal beneficiaries. This anecdote is about Neelam Behn, an 11-year-old girl, who hails from a family, engaged in garland making. Most of the families from this community send their children to school to avoid disturbance during working hours and also because free lunch is provided in school under the mid day meal scheme in Gujarat. As a common practice, girls in this community study only till Standard X and then get engaged in supporting the family. Neelam is aware of this trend and says that her only aim is to remain happy. Operational as Gujarat NGO, Akshaya Patra provides mid day meal in Neelam's school. Everyday Neelam waits for the lunch hour, so that she can enjoy a wholesome meal with her friends.

Like Neelam there are many mid day meal beneficiaries in Gujarat and across India. Hence, the Foundation takes care of catering to the local palate of a region so that the mid day meal beneficiaries can enjoy at least one wholesome meal per day. There have been many positive impacts of the mid day meal scheme in Gujarat and also other part of the country. It is seen that there have been an increase in regular attendance among children and also the retention rate has shown considerable increase.

Teachers have also seen an increased concentration among children during class hours. The cooked mid-day meal programme came as a respite for teachers also. Now, teachers can completely concentrate in their teaching rather than diverting their attention towards cooking and providing lunch for children. This scheme has been very beneficial in addressing the issue of classroom hunger.

As mentioned earlier, this Gujarat NGO is currently feeding around 4,00,158 children across the state and it indeed aims to feed many more children.
