Rhinoplasty Procedure - Guidelines
This can be done at any age from sixteen years onwards, but usually young adults are the ones that opt for this procedure.
This procedure can also be combined with reduction of tip of the nose or width of the nose.
Although this can be done under local anesthesia, it is preferable to have General Anesthesia.
No scar is visible after the surgery as it is done from within the nostril, unless it is combined with another procedure.
Even then the scar will be in the natural crease and will not be visible.
A piece of bone is taken from the hip region through a small cut which is fashioned and inserted into the nose.
An inert material called silicone can also be used in the place of bone; but we prefer to use bone since silicone is a foreign material and chances of displacement at a later date and infection are associated with it.
One or two days of hospitalization may be required.
A small splint over the nose and a small dressing over the hip region need to be removed after a week.
The swelling over the nose subsides in 5 to 7 days.
In this procedure broad and wide nostrils are reduced to required size; also the thickness of the tip of the nose can be reduced and sharpened.
Generally young people ask for this procedure.
Reduction often needs to be combined with augmentation of nasal bridge in some for a satisfactory appearance.
This can be done safely and comfortably under local anesthesia as a day procedure unless bony correction is required.
Scars will be almost invisible in the natural nasal grooves.
CORRECTIVE RHINOPLASTY In case of deviation of nose to one side or difficulty in breathing through one nostril, corrective rhinoplasty is indicated.
This may be congenital deviation or acquired due to injury or infection.
General anaesthesia is required for this procedure.
Also hospitalisation may be required.
Bony correction and/or cartilage correction is done in this procedure.
The nostrils are packed for a short time and patient would be advised to breath through the mouth temporarily.
AFTER ANY RHINOPLASTY Face, nose and eyelids may swell slightly in a few patients which will subside in a couple of days.
Black eye(s) may be noted sometimes which will disappear in due course.
Patients are advised to avoid injury to nose after surgery for about a week or two.
