    Fatigue

    • Muscle fatigue can cause leg cramps in children. Tired and overworked muscles may stiffen and leg cramps may result.

    Exercising

    • Muscles need time to rest and recuperate. Hence excessive exercising or play may also cause leg cramps in children. Children need to warm up and cool down before and after their exercises to avoid this.

    Electrolyte Imbalances

    • Electrolyte imbalances may also cause leg cramps in children. This can be controlled by regularly taking calcium and magnesium. Green leafy vegetables are also useful in enhancing the mineral balance in the body.

    Dehydration

    • Lack of water can cause problems in the transportation of nutrients across the cells and muscles. It may also lead to an access of lactic acid built up in the cells, which can cause cramps.

    Obesity

    • Obesity may be one of the main causes of leg cramps in children. Obesity causes muscle fatigue due to the additional weight.

    Illness

    • Leg cramps can also be an indication of serious problems like leukemia and other diseases. See a physician if your child experiences abnormally painful or chronic leg cramps.
