How to Replace Jeep CJ-7 Tie Rod Ends

    Removal

    • 1). Raise the front end of your CJ with a jack and support it on jack stands. Remove the lug nuts with a tire iron then remove the wheels.

    • 2). Remove the cotter pins with a screwdriver and take out the retaining nuts on both sides.

    • 3). Unscrew the mounting nut and move the damper aside if your CJ is so equipped. Also check the damper for leaks and any damage. If there is any, you should replace it.

    • 4). Lower the tie rods from the steering knuckles and arms. Use a blow hammer if you are having difficulty lowering the tie rods from the steering knuckles and arms. Do not use a steel hammer.

    • 5). Use a tie rod puller to remove the tie rod ends and assembly. This could take a few tries. Use a blow hammer if you are having difficulty lowering the tie rods from the steering knuckles and arms. Do not use a steel hammer.

    • 6). Loosen the bolts on the assembly clamps with the socket wrench and unscrew the ends. Remove the tie rod ends if you are just replacing them.

    Installation

    • 1). Insert the new tie rod ends into position. Install the clamps and the bolts and torque the nuts tightly with the wrench.

    • 2). Grease the new tie rods and their ends if they have grease fittings. If they have sealed joints, inspect them for leaks or damage before installing them.

    • 3). Place the tie rods back into the linkage sleeves and tighten the clamps with the wrench.

    • 4). Raise the tie rods back to the steering knuckles and arms. Install the nuts and torque them with the wrench. Install new cotter pins.

    • 5). Remount the wheels on the car then lower the vehicle from the jack stands with the jack.
