Fix leaking pipes, plumbing problems and sources of excess moisture. Verify dryer hoses are vented to the outside. Use bathroom ventilation fans to minimize humidity. Wipe up pooled water around the shower or bathtub. Use a fan in problem areas. - 2

Look for all the mold in the area of concern. If conditions are right for mold growth, it may be growing in more than one place. If you smell mold, it is there, even if not visible. Mold can grow behind wallpaper, on fabric and on wooden objects like window framing. - 3

Remove the mold. Add ¼ to ½ cup of household detergent to 1 gallon of water. For hard surfaces, use a scrub brush. Scrub thoroughly, rinsing the brush in water frequently. Wipe dry. Items with soft, porous surfaces may have to be discarded. - 5

For stubborn mold stains, or if the area needs to be sanitized, use household cleaner with bleach. Use household cleaner with bleach to spray color-fast, hard surfaces generously. Let it sit for five to 10 minutes and scrub again. Dry thoroughly.
