How to Repair an Oil Pan Plug
- 1). Roll a floor jack under the vehicle. Align the jack with a safe lifting point. Jack the vehicle off the ground. Place one jack stand on either side of the vehicle. Lower the floor jack.
- 2). Place a drain pan under the leaking drain plug. Remove the drain plug from the oil pan with an adjustable wrench. Allow the oil to drain from the vehicle.
- 3). Insert the drill bit included with a drain repair kit into a tee-handle tap wrench. Coat the bit with cutting fluid. Slide the end of the drill bit into the drain plug opening. Turn the tee-handle clockwise to remove the damaged threads from the oil pan.
- 4). Bore the drilled hole with a counter bore bit installed in the tee-handle tap wrench. Coat the tip of the counter bore bit with cutting fluid. Turn the tee-handle tap wrench clockwise until the bit seats against the drain pan.
- 5). Place the tap included with the drain plug repair kit into the tap wrench. Coat the tap with grease. Tap the hole by turning the tap wrench clockwise. Remove the tap from the hole. Remove any loose metal chips from the hole with a round wire brush.
- 6). Turn a screw insert clockwise by hand to thread it in the drain plug hole.
- 7). Insert an insert installation tool into the tap wrench. Coat the end of the tool with cutting fluid. Turn the tap wrench clockwise until the insert seats into the hole.
- 8). Place the drain plug included with the drain repair kit into the repaired hole.
- 9). Raise the vehicle with the floor jack. Remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle to the ground.

Fill the engine with the amount of oil specified by the vehicle owner's manual.
