Nickodemus - Endangered Species
About.com Rating
So when I saw this in the review pile, I was a bit dubious. There was mention of New York consisting of different areas that represent different parts of the world and this CD manages to represent the ethnicity of these while still retaining the essential "New Yorkness." Set English cynicism to 10 and proceed with caution.
Well that's just impossible, this CD is full of the funk. I was in the middle of a repetitive stage of science and had just finished listening to Hot Chip.
I put Nickodemus in and the mood in my empty lab changed. From hipster cool to "bringing the heat" in approximately the time it takes for "funky in the middle to get going" by the time "give the drummer some" had finished and "Back from Africa" I was bouncing off the walls. This really does manage to encompass and embrace the sounds of the world and still retain the groove to keep you moving.
For those of you reading this in New York, if you like this you should check out the "Turntables on the Hudson" night that runs monthly. You turn up, get on the boat, listen to music like this by Nickodemus and others (this month features Quantic and Mr Scruff), and from what I'm guessing dance like a madman without trying to fall in the Hudson......
