Clear Up My Acne! How I Did It and You Can Too!

If you are totally frustrated with pimples, blackheads and oily skin, you are not alone! I remember being told that my skin would magically clear up when I turned 18, but guess what? Acne plagues adults too! Here are the results of a lot of research and trial and error, on myself, my sister and brother, and then finally a whole bunch of other people who asked what I did to clear up my acne.

1. Keep it Clean! First off, you really need to keep your skin scrupulously clean. I don't mean scrubbing the heck out of it with industrial strength cleaners, but you really do need to cleanse twice a day. Less can undermine your efforts. More can aggravate your skin and exacerbate the problem.

2. Hands Off! You'd shudder if you realized how many gross bacteria you touch in the course of a normal day. Elevator buttons, telephones, the pen you borrow to sign a credit card receipt, car door handles... and so much more! That said, don't touch your face. Except when you are washing it.

3. Drink it Away. One of the single most important things you can do for your health is to drink enough water. This hydrates and cleanses every organ, and flushes out nasty toxins. If you don't flush them out, they will cause a whole host of problems. Your skin is the largest organ in the body and will be the most obvious reflection of this. I don't even know how many doctors, dermatologists, herbalists and other specialists I saw to clear up my acne, but this one thing they all agreed on. Make sure you get enough water.

4. Water and Fiber: the Dynamic Duo. You need to help the water cleanse the toxins out of your body by getting enough fiber. Imagine that the fiber is a scrub brush and the water is the rinsing agent. They work together to keep things clean on the inside.

5. Nourish. Cleansing (inside and outside) is an important first step, but then you need to give the skin some good building blocks to manifest a glowing, healthy complexion. A well balanced diet in which you get all your vitamins and minerals will give your body what it needs to create and maintain clear, acne free skin.

6. Products. The only downside with clearing up acne the naturally way, is it doesn't happen overnight. Actually, nothing does, not even all those expensive drugs that your dermatologist will happily prescribe. But the results are long lasting and without the ugly side effects. If you want to sort of jump start your efforts, you can use a gentle over the counter treatment. Benzoyl peroxide worked great for my sister, however, I would caution against sleeping with it on, unless you sleep flat on your back, because if it gets on your pillow and then in your eyes, you can have a nasty reaction. My preferred over the counter acne treatment was those little pads that are pre-soaked with salicylic acid. It dries quickly, so there's no danger of getting it on clothes or pillowcases, and it does a great job.
