How to Weatherize With Window Treatments
- 1). Choose your window treatments wisely to weatherize efficiently. Shades, blinds and curtains that are dark in color reflect light and heat away from your windows to keep your home cool in the summer. Cellular shades provide a similar effect by locking heat inside your home in the winter.
- 2). Hang heavy drapes to provide added insulation to your windows. Keep the drapes closed in the warm weather to reduce the need for cooling in your home. Open the drapes on cold, sunny days to allow in heat from the sun.
- 3). Weatherize your windows with insulation board. Cut a piece of insulation board to fit the width of your window frame snugly. Adjust the height of the board to allow light into your home in the upper third of the window. Insulation boards are available in different R-values, or amount of insulation, at home improvement stores. Cover the board, if desired, with lightweight curtains to make your windows more attractive.
- 4). Perk up a drab insulated window shade with fabric. The decorative touch can also provide an added measure of protection against the sun. Cut a piece of fabric to fit the window shade, and affix with fabric glue.
