Topical Drops for Earache Pain
- Severe earache pain can be eased by either prescription or over-the-counter pain medications. A good remedy is Similasan Earache Relief, which is a natural product. Another is Antipyrine/Benzocaine Drops, which is available by prescription only.
- If the ear hurts and there is pain and a fever, it might be in an indication of an ear infection. Children are more prone to ear infections than adults. These medications are only by prescription, and they include a combination of Neomycin, Polymyxin B, and Hydrocortisone Otic solution. Once the antibiotic takes effect, pain will begin to subside.
- There are over-the-counter drops to prevent painful Swimmer's Ear or Otitis Externa. The drops contain alcohol or vinegar to help dry the ears out. If a person gets Swimmer's Ear, along with the drops, an antibiotic will need to be prescribed by a doctor to clear the infection and fight the pain.
- Excess ear wax is more of a nuisance, disrupting clarity of hearing. It also can be uncomfortable if enough wax builds up. Two over-the-counter medications which prevent or treat wax buildup are Cerumenex Ear Drops and Murine Ear Drops.
- There are over-the-counter medications for pain in a baby's ear. However, experts suggest taking a child to the doctor. Repeated and untreated infections can lead to hearing loss. If needed, a doctor can prescribe pain medications, usually with benzocaine.
