McIlroy's U.S. Open Victory Make Furyk Surprised

Rory McIlroy is a professional golfer from County Down, Northern Ireland; he won the U.S. Open Championship, his first major. He finished with a record score of 16-under-par on his way to an eight-shot victory, as the youngest winner since Bobby Jones in 1923. Then, Furyk marvels at McIlroy's U.S. Open margin.

What Furyk marvels said about McIlroy's U.S. Open Victory? In this article, you may find the answer. If you are looking to buy good golf clubs, you may try these Callaway X24 HOT Irons.

When Jim Furyk won the U.S. Open championship at Olympia Fields in 2003, his winning score was 8-under-par 272. Four players finished the event under par.

In 2006 at Winged Foot, Geoff Ogilvy took the U.S. Open crown at 5-over 285.

Both were at Congressional last week as Rory McIlroy torched the Open field with record totals of 16-under-par 268 and an eight-stroke win over runner-up Jason Day.

As they looked forward to the Travelers Championship here at TPC River Highlands, they looked back at McIlroy's stunning performance in his first major win.

"How do I put it in perspective? I think what was impressive about his score wasn't that it was 16-under. I think what was impressive was that he won by 8," Furyk said. "If he shot 16-under and the next best score was even par, then the 16-under becomes more important to me. But I think winning by eight is what was so amazing and what was so impressive there."

Ogilvy agreed and brought up Tiger Woods' 15-stroke victory at Pebble Beach in the 2000 Open.

"It's not as good as Tiger's 12-under at Pebble because the next best at Pebble was 3-over," Ogilvy said. "Winning by eight shots is astonishing, and Rory was in front basically after nine holes and never relinquished it. He was always way in front.

Like he wasn't just in front and then had a great Saturday or something. He was way in front the whole week. He played two groups in front of me on Thursday and Friday, and he was 13-under. He might have been nine or 10 shots in front after 35 holes. That's absurd.

"Congressional, I think, is a wonderful test. I think it's a difficult golf course," Furyk said. "I think it was set up very well, other than the fact that what had happened that they kind of lost the greens early in the week. There were a lot of dead spots on them. They needed the rain. The scores were so low because the greens were soft and they weren't fast.
