How to Remove a Steering Wheel
- 1). Straighten out the wheels, so that they face forward--this will help with alignment if a new wheel is installed later.
- 2). Disengage the car's electrical system, to stop any possible electric shocks. This is done best by simply using an adjustable wrench to remove the battery from its terminals.
- 3). Disconnect the horn cap by pushing it down, and twisting it. Then pull it up towards you.
- 4). Pull off the shaft nut retainer (if it exists) by hand. Use the adjustable wrench to unscrew and remove the shaft nut.
- 5). Mark the shaft with a felt tip pen at the 12 o'clock position where the wheel meets the shaft. This will help you know where to place the top of a new steering wheel onto the shaft.
- 6). Remove the steering shaft by looking inside the hub and locating the two tapped holes on the side of the shaft. Attach the puller around the shaft and to the tapped holes, and pull on the shaft to remove it. Now pull off the steering wheel, by hand.
