Plus Size Swimwear - Who Is Designing With Us In Mind?
One of the most frustrating shopping experiences a full-figured woman can have is shopping for swimwear. About February or March of each year, I always get the itch to see winter in my rear-view mirror and get out to the beach again. And I ALWAYS want to start the season out with a new swimsuit. Doesn't everyone?
And every year, what should be a fun shopping experience ends up being a disappointing one as once again I end up having to settle for a swimsuit designed for some size 2 waif, with no chest! I end up with something that doesn't fit well, doesn't provide enough support and I end up just feeling self-conscious when I wear it. So,what do I do? Put it in a drawer and drag out that t-shirt and pair of shorts I always end up wearing.
Full Figured All-American Girls Need Swimwear Too!!!
I am not a size 2 and I bet you aren't either. Who is? Not most American women. I recently read an Ezine article citing a 2007 study showing 50% of American women age 18 and over wear plus size clothing. That's you and me, sister!
Plus Size Swimwear Designed with Us in Mind
You would think, with those numbers, we would get the recognition we deserve from the swimwear industry. Well ladies, Haka Surfwear has partnered up with two terrific companies who carry plus size swimsuits designed with us in mind. A wonderful variety of plus size swimwear, plus size tankinis, and plus size coverups that appeal to OUR tastes and meet OUR needs.
The Cover-Up
Don't you just love these? A swimsuit cover-up is a practical garment to own, because it allows the wearer to transition from the beach to a restaurant or nearby tiki bar without having to change outfits. Nice, right? They also can protect us from those dangerous rays from the sun, especially if we are on the beach for an extended period of time.
Remember when most cover-ups looked like we put on our terry-cloth robe? Boy, those days are over! Cover-ups today are so stylish and come in a variety of colors. If the volume you see at the beach is any indication, sarongs are certainly the most popular cover-up. They cover the areas of our bodies that we are usually the most sensitive about – hips, belly and thighs.
If you prefer more coverage, try the Tunic style of swimsuit cover-up. This is a loose, long top that usually reaches down to mid-thigh. These normally are light-weight and made of breathable fabrics such as cotton. Just throw a pair of shorts on with a Tunic and you can leave the beach and hit the mall!
The Tankini
Have you considered the tankini for your beach bumming days? These swimsuits are usually made of a spandex-and-cotton mix, but some designers use Lycra and nylon. The tankini is a combination of a bikini bottom and a tank top. The top piece usually extends down to somewhere between the top of your navel and the top of your hip.
For those of us who prefer a bit more modesty, this two-piece style's body coverage is closer to a one-piece swimsuit than a bikini. One of the nice features of it being two pieces is the convenience of not having to remove the entire garment when we make a visit to the Ladies room! Another is having the fun of mixing and matching various tops and bottoms. These tankini swimming suits come in a variety of colors and patterns, so have a blast!
