Whether you purposely brand your own internet based business or not, you still have a brand even if you do not know it. Your market will associate certain things with your business just based on your domain name. If your product or service is strong enough, then people may forgive an awful domain name - but, we do not know for sure about that. Think about discovering the domain that really works for you as making an investment in the future of your business.

When you register a domain name that contains a name that is trademarked, you are opening yourself up for legal issues. The most important thing to remember is any company will definitely come after you if you do it. Back in the day people would snatch up trademarked domains and basically extort large sums of money from the owners who wanted the name. There is just no way around this situation, or out of it, so forget about doing it because it is not worth the extreme hassle.

When it comes down to selecting a good a domain name, register it as soon as you come across it. You will be a most unhappy camper if you find it and return to get it but someone has beaten you to it. This is not something that happens all the time, but it only takes one time to lose out on a name you just love to cure you of it.

So this is just a little piece of advice that we feel is worth mentioning to you.

The need for multiple domains is pretty standard except for the largest corporations. Whether or not you are worried about competition taking your domain in the form of a dot org/net is up to you, of course.

A highly branded and recognized domain that will work with two or three initials as a dot com may be advisable. Another thing to think about are the easy misspellings of your domain if they exist.

Really, the last thing you want to discover is your domain does not quite fit what you had intended, so get it right the first time. It really pays to be prepared and know exactly what you want to get. Be sure to look at domain auctions, as well, because you just never know what you will find. Hopefully you have a better appreciation of why your URL name matters very much.
