How to Cut Black Walnuts
- 1). Put on a pair of disposable rubber gloves.
- 2). Press your fingernail into the hull of one walnut to see if it leaves a dent. If no dent appears, set the walnut aside for two to three days to soften. Continue testing the remaining walnuts. Only cut walnuts that are soft enough to dent.
- 3). Place a knife with a 3 1/2-inch blade into a table clamp so the blade faces upward.
- 4). Stand at the end of the knife with the tip of it facing towards you. Hold either end of the walnut with your hands and place it on top of the knife blade near the handle. One hand will be on one side of the knife blade and the other hand will be on the other side of the knife blade. Only the walnut should touch the knife.
- 5). Press down with firm pressure and roll the black walnut along the knife blade until the nut reaches the end of the blade.
- 6). Remove the walnut from the knife blade and note the cut line that encircles the hull.
- 7). Grasp the hull in both hands, keeping them on separate sides of the cut line. Twist your hands in opposite directions to loosen and remove the hull. Typically only half of the hull will come off when you do this. Place the removed hull in the trash.
- 8). Hold onto the black walnut fruit, which is now visible, and pull the remaining section of hull off. Dispose of the hull in the trash.
- 9). Fill a bucket halfway with water and place the black walnut fruit into it. Repeat the hulling process with the remaining black walnuts.
