How to Have a Cajun Theme Party
- 1). Purchase real or fake fishing nets from your local bait and tackle or party supply store. Drape the nets over the corners in the room, and tack each end to the wall.
- 2). Buy a few large synthetic magnolia blooms and place them inside of the fish nets to display the combination of Southern charm and beauty with abundant seafood and swamp-dwelling creatures.
- 3). Fill the nets with small, plastic alligators and snakes amidst the magnolias, or tack a few of the creatures to the wall.
- 4). Tape some posters featuring the fleur de lis on the walls to add more Cajun-style decor to the event.
- 5). Purchase a large, stainless steel pot for the crab boil, a staple at Cajun-themed parties. Bring an additional pot to the party filled with gumbo.
- 6). Cover the tables with newspaper so guests can take the ingredients from the pot and eat them directly on the table. The newspaper also adds a rustic authenticity to the party scene. Add place mats in the shape of chili or jalapeno peppers to the table to further emphasize the "spicy" theme.
- 7). Play jazz or Zydeco music in the background to set the party mood. Or, ask your friends to form their own Zydeco band with the "instruments" you've provided like washboards or wooden spoons.
- 8). Fill the large pot with Cajun seasoning, water, whole crabs and crawfish, small ears of corn, red potatoes and a dash of cayenne and chili pepper. Begin boiling the ingredients to serve at the party.
- 9). Serve each of the guests a serving from the crab boil pot with the ladle, and fill each guest's bowl with gumbo. Enjoy the food and music.
