Bathroom Fans - A Few Choices

103 10
There are a large number of choices when it comes to picking out a new bathroom extractor fan.
They come in many styles and can be bought according to where you want to mount them such as a window unit or one that mounts through the wall.
Before deciding it might be a good idea to learn a little more about them.
In many parts of the country you are required by building codes to have an extractor fan built into your bathroom.
This is a good idea as they will improve the environment within your home making it a better place to live.
It also reduces the moisture in the bathroom after a shower which helps fight mold growth.
Most bathroom fans are rated by how much air that they are able to move and you use this to determine the size of fan that you will need.
IT is not too hard to calculate this.
The first thing you need is the size of the bathroom.
Take the width times the length times the height to give you the volume of the room.
You need to change this volume of air three times per hour so multiple the volume of the room times three to give you the amount of air that the fan needs to be able to move.
To help in removing the moisture from the air after a shower the fan should remain on at least 15 minutes after shutting off the switch.
This can be accomplished by the use of a timer built into the switch.
You can mount your extractor fan in the wall, ceiling or in a window.
If you decide to mount the fan in the ceiling or in the wall and you have no external wall in the bathroom you will need access to the crawl space over head to run the duct work and the wiring.
If you do have an external wall then you can drill through to the outside to duct the fan.
If you want to install it in a window you can buy fans that sit in the window opening similar to an air conditioning unit.
When you compare extractor fans from other parts of the house you will find that the bathroom unit is usually smaller because of the smaller amount of air that needs to be moved.
