How to Install Cement Fiber Board

104 8
    • 1). Attach a plastic vapor barrier, using a staple gun and staples, in the area where you will install the cement fiber board. This will help protect wood studs in the event that moisture seeps behind the cement fiber board. Use a product that is specifically designed to be a vapor barrier, not plastic sheeting that is not designed for this use.

    • 2). Cut the cement fiber board to the required size using a circular saw with a carbide blade. Carbide blades are designed for cutting through cement fiber board. If you are going to be cutting the cement board indoors, use a drywall knife with a carbide blade to score the cement board where it needs to be cut. Apply pressure to the back of the cement board along the scoring, and the board should break cleanly. Curved areas or holes needed for plumbing fixtures can be cut with a drill or jigsaw.

    • 3). Install the cement fiber board using a drill and moisture-resistant screws spaced about 8 inches apart. Leave a gap of 1/8 inch between pieces. For cement fiber board that is installed in a bathtub area, a 1/4-inch space should be left above the tub to help keep moisture from wicking between the cement board and vapor barrier.

    • 4). Seal the gaps between pieces with silicone caulk. Allow the caulk to dry completely before tiling the cement fiber board. Install the caulk carefully so that it is level with the cement fiber board and does not bulge or create an uneven surface.
