How to Keep a Long Distance Relationship

I'm here to give you 10 ways in which you can keep your long distance relationship.
1.
Work out the guidelines of the long distance relationship.
Don't be afraid to ask questions on sensitive subjects.
For instance: "Are you gay or bi-sexual?", "Are you willing to move closer if things get serious?", "What is considered cheating to you?" and so on.
Some of these questions might be uncomfortable to answer, and may offend your partner, but who cares.
You have to look out for number one.
Remember, you will be the one dealing with any heartbreaking surprises that may come your way.
2.
Refrain from heated arguments and hurtful comments.
There is nothing worse than holding bitter resentment with someone 2000 miles away.
Keep the conversation light and on a positive note.
Talk about your favorite foods, career goals, places you'd like to travel and so on.
3.
Watch a movie together every Friday night.
Get on your cell phone, go to Blockbuster video and decide on a good movie (preferably comedy).
Try to synch up the DVD so that both of you are watching it at the same time.
"On the count of 3 press play, 1, 2, 3...
" 4.
Make sure you always plan out your next visit to see each other.
Do not wait too long with this because not having something to look forward too can sometimes cause you to slowly drift apart.
Count down the days together on the phone.
Example: "Only 12 more days baby, woohoo!" 5.
Try not to over plan what the both of you are going to do together on your next visit.
This can lead to high expectations and disappointment.
Just playfully tease each other with imaginative scenarios leaving some room for mystery.
6.
I know some of you may not like this but you should always try to keep in contact with your LDL (Long Distance Lover) throughout the day.
Give him/her some idea of your whereabouts.
Don't worry, as these frequent conversations only need to last a minute or so.
Make sure you stay somewhat consistent and predictable with your phone calls.
This will help out in the trust department.
I know a certain amount of spontaneity is good but you should only demonstrate this in person, and not over the phone.
7.
Please stay away from nightclubs and bars.
I cannot express this enough.
Venues such as these are designed for drinking and relaxation which can lead to close personal contact with the opposite sex.
Even if you have the strength of will not to go out of line, it is still considered best practice not to attend such places.
I can think of a million other things you can do with your time.
Just make sure that the next time you do visit each other, go out from time to time (a dinner, museum or jazz club are a couple of examples).
8.
Keep yourself busy.
The benefit of having a long distance relationship is that you have a lot of time to yourself without your partner being in your face every day.
Maintaining your independence and individuality is very important.
We all know that these attributes dry up real quick when you are together every day.
Distance also gives you time to work harder at your career or hobby if you have one.
9.
Refrain from conversations on sexual topics and past lovers at the beginning of your long distance relationship.
This can bring about jealousy and distrust.
It's always good to know about your partners past but wait until you both develop some level of respect and comfort for each other before bringing up this topic.
10.
Trust is key in a long distance relationship.
It does not matter if your 20 miles away or 2000, jealousy can always take its toll.
Always give your partner the benefit of the doubt at the beginning of the relationship and remember to always confront a situation that bothers you at the time it happens.
Don't wait 2 months later and expect that he/she will know or remember.
