How do I Open a Current UK Bank Account?
- 1). List by priority the main facilities you want when you open a current bank account in the UK. You may prefer interest on money in your current bank account or you may prefer a flexible overdraft facility. Some UK banks charge monthly fees but offer free, or reduced price travel, home or car insurance. Others offer free banking, providing you keep a certain amount in your account, or deposit a minimum amount in your current bank account each month. The FSA has produced a downloadable booklet "Just the Facts About Your Bank Account."
- 2). Choose a bank with branches throughout the UK before deciding to open a current bank account. These are referred to in the UK as high street banks: they generally have a branch in most high streets in the country. The most prevalent high street banks are Lloyds's TSB, NatWest, HSBC, Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland, Halifax, and Santander (previously Abbey), but there are more.
- 3). Check for UK high street banks offering current bank accounts online. Use a comparison website as they will summarize all the benefits, costs, charges and facilities, making it easier to open a current bank account.
- 4). Select your bank, then click "Apply Now" or something similar. You will be taken to your chosen bank's secure website. Read the current account synopsis to ensure it suits your requirements.
- 5). Complete the application form carefully. Accept the bank's terms and conditions. Follow subsequent instructions and submit your application for approval. You will generally receive an instant response. You will need to supply original proof of ID (passport or drivers license), address (two recent utility bills showing your current address) and income (payslips) to a local bank branch before your account is activated.
- 6). Go to your local bank branch. Provide the cashier with your bank details and give him your documentation. It will be checked, copied and returned. Your current account will be activated. You will receive your bank cards and checks via mail.
