    • 1). Obtain a free credit report. Under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, consumers are entitled to one free credit report from each of the major credit bureaus every 12 months. Visit the Annual Credit Report's website, call 877-322-8228 or mail a request form.

    • 2). Order a credit report from the major credit bureaus. These include Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. The reports include your credit score and credit history.

    • 3). Get an adverse action report. Adverse action refers to any negative action a company takes against you as a result of information in a credit report. This includes denying applications for credit, insurance and employment. The company denying your application is required to furnish you a notice containing the name, address and phone number of the consumer reporting company. Within 60 days of receiving the notice, you can request a free credit report from the reporting company.
