How to Make Games in BYOND
- 1). Work through one or all of Zilal's BYOND tutorials, or ZBTs. BYOND user Zilal created three tutorials for developers new to BYOND, each geared toward a different game genre: Action/Role-Playing Game, Strategy/Board game and Text MUD. Choose whichever interests you most and work through it entirely; Zilal will give you the basic knowledge necessary for building a full game.
- 2). Examine "Your First World" and "Step BYOND." These freely downloadable files are fully completed worlds for the beginning programmer to explore. "Your First World" is a simple program with chat features, while "Step BYOND" is a playable adventure game. Familiarize yourself with how these programs were put together.
- 3). Study BYOND's reference material. The BYOND DM Guide is a massive document explaining all the essentials for making BYOND games using its programming language Dream Maker, while The DM Reference is a glossary of the language's terms.
- 4). Utilize other resources. BYOND's developer forums provide an archive of previously answered queries, and should these not answer your questions, the community of veteran programmers will come to your aid. Peruse BYOND's developer page, which updates frequently with tips and helpful files for easily carrying out specific tasks.
