Should You Seek a Doctor For a Bad Headache?

103 27
We all get headaches on occasion, though usually we just take something and keep right on working.
However, there are times when the headache you are suffering from really needs to be heeded.
Here are a few examples: Allergy: You might think this does not require help, but it does.
Not so much because the headache is a problem.
It's because your reaction to what your allergic to may not always be a headache.
It could progress to anaphylactic shock, which is deadly.
Treating the allergy now may save your life down the road.
Other allergy symptoms might include a runny nose, swollen sinuses and itchy, watery eyes.
There is rarely a fever, though you may have a slight sore throat due to post nasal drip.
Infection: Sinus infections can cause an intense headache, usually right above and below your eyes.
You may also notice that teeth in your upper jaw hurt.
This is in part due to the inflammation of the infection.
You may require antibiotics to get rid of the problem, though they are not always prescribed.
Your doctor will be able to determine whether or not it is needed.
Other symptoms may include a slight fever, earache and sore throat.
The fever is rarely very high, less than 100f in most patients.
Meningitis: This is a deadly disease, and it can kill even young, healthy people.
It is easily confused with the flu at first, as the symptoms are similar.
A high fever, intense headache, nausea and vomiting are the first symptoms.
This can progress to confusion, difficulty concentrating, seizures, sleepiness and light sensitivity.
It strikes fast and hard.
If you have any of the symptoms above, see your doctor or go to the emergency room.
Migraine: These headaches are intense and usually on one side of the head.
An aura may precede an episode, giving you some warning of what is coming.
Light and sound make the headache worse and it is often accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
There are prescription medications that can prove beneficial, so seeing your doctor is a good idea.
He or she may also be able to help you find your triggers, so you can avoid as many future attacks as possible.
Stroke: A stroke is caused by bleeding in the brain.
The blood pools and puts pressure on the area and causes the pain.
There are other symptoms that this is what is going on.
One side of your body may start shaking or become paralyzed.
Speaking may be difficult and one eye may droop.
These are signs that you need to be at the emergency room.
The sooner treatment begins, the more brain function can be saved.
Headaches, like other pain, is a signal from your body that something is wrong.
Pay attention to the signal and you can save your life.
