Automotive Mold & Mildew Elimination
- Mold smells are one of the worst parts of a mold infestation. If the smells are coming from the air vents of the car, this probably means that the mold is growing inside the air conditioning system. The first place to check is the evaporator, where excess moisture can build up and create a breeding ground for mold on the evaporator fins. The fins can be cleaned and sprayed with a moldicide.
- If the mold is found growing in the carpet or upholstery of the car, these sections must be cut out and thrown away. Unfortunately, mold extends thread-like roots deep into any porous surface, and is nearly impossible to remove from carpet and similar materials. Vinyl, unless badly infected, can often be cleaned, as can windows and air conditioning vents.
- There are a number of automotive mold cleaners that can be purchased from auto body shops for cleaning out mold problems in cars. These cleaners have chemicals that kill the mold and solvents that help remove it from smooth surfaces. Auto body shops will also offer to clean out the air vents of a car, especially if there is a mold problem in the air conditioning system. The shops use compressors to pump cleaner into the vents where it can kill any mold colonies present.
- Ozonators produce ozone gas, a type of ionized oxygen that is excellent at breaking apart particles in the air in an accelerated oxidation process. Ozonators can only be used in cars that can be sealed and left alone for at least several hours (ozone is poisonous is large quantities), and they are typically used as the final step of a remediation process. The ozone will destroy biological material like mold spores which may be hiding beyond the reach of conventional cleaners.
- Mold needs a wet and preferably dark place to grow. By exposing the automobile to sunlight, the interior is warmed and dried at the same time, which can help in making conditions inhospitable for any remaining mold spores. The windows should be left open so that moisture can escape as it evaporates.
