Kitchen Cabinet Finishing With Tung Oil
- 1). Sand the cabinets and the cabinet doors with medium-grit sandpaper. Medium-grit sandpaper removes scratches and other flaws from the wood’s surface. Sand the cabinets again with fine-grit sandpaper.
- 2). Open a can of tung oil with a screwdriver. Dip the rag into the tung oil. Wipe the oil onto the cabinet’s surface, applying an even coat. Allow the tung oil to penetrate the wood for 20 to 30 minutes, and then wipe away the excess with a dry rag.
- 3). Allow the Tung oil time to dry. Tung oil is slow drying. It may take 24 to 48 hours for the oil to dry.
- 4). Lightly sand the cabinets with the fine-grit sand paper. Tung oil must be sanded between each coat.
- 5). Apply another coat of Tung oil to the cabinets. Repeat the application and sanding procedures used for the first coat with each additional coat of Tung oil. You may need to apply three or four coats to finish your cabinets.
