How to Dissolve Polystyrene
- 1). Set a rigid plastic container on a stable work surface that sits in a well ventilated area away from open flames.
- 2). Pour acetone in the rigid plastic container until the fluid level sits 1/2 to 3/4 inch above the container's bottom.
- 3). Place a piece of polystyrene foam in the rigid plastic container. Allow the polystyrene to sit until it dissolves in the acetone.
- 4). Remove the dissolved polystyrene by scooping it from the acetone with a plastic spoon. Dispose of the plastic spoon and the polystyrene by throwing it in a garbage bag.
- 5). Pour the acetone back into the container after the dissolved polystyrene has been removed.
