103 30
Depression is a completely joyless experience.
It is like being at the bottom of a deep, dark hole and whichever way you turn you can find no way out.
It has a destructive effect on both the sufferer and those around them.
No one really knows what it is that makes some people prone to depression, although there is mounting evidence that it can be bought on as result of negative thoughts, which are then amplified and the depression increased resulting in a downward spiral.
Before embarking on any sort of self-help however, the degree to which the depression is affecting one's life should be examined.
In fact there are two aspects that should be addressed, the first being whether or not one's depression is leading to thoughts of suicide.
If this is the case, then the sufferer should seek professional advice.
This is not to say that self-help won't work, but that professional advice should be the first port of call.
The secretaries at all attempting cure what depression oneself is to what degree is affecting one's work, relationships, sleep and appetite.
If one is having serious problems in any of these areas then again, professional help should be sought rather than trying to go it alone.
There are basically four areas to explore for someone who is seeking to treat their depression themselves.
1.
The Internet
The Internet carries so much information these days that many of us seem to suffer from information overload from time to time.
However, there is no doubt that this can be a good source of information, as long as one takes certain precautions.
The main precaution to take is to use the Internet for sites that are known to be reliable.
These are generally to be found listed in the various self-help books available.
As long as the credentials of the authors check out then it can be considered safe to view the information on the websites they recommend.
One should always bear in mind that fraudsters are commonplace on the Internet, peddling products and services that are completely useless in order to turn a fast buck.
2.
Books
Before buying the book, make sure that it is written by a person or body that actually has the authority to write such a book.
Having found that the author is legitimate, books are an excellent resource.
Not only can you go at your own pace, books are generally cheaper than therapy, and you can search the contents over and over.
It's a good idea to buy more than one book, as different authors will express themselves in different ways which often gives one a more complete understanding of the subject.
3.
Self-Help Groups
Self-help groups no great resource in a number of ways.
Firstly, by meeting people who suffer from the same condition, one feels supported and understood.
I found it much easier to come to terms with my depression when my father, who happens to be on his deathbed at the time, simply said "I understand.
" Secondly, because people share information and their own experiences, self-help groups can be a great resource in finding ways to combat depression.
Inevitably, treating depression will require a combination of resources; however, the key is to make the decision to take action.
