105 23
One can only imagine the frustration and exasperation that accompanies looking after or raising a child with autism. The question for any loving parent or caregiver is, "What can I do to help this child live a fuller, happier life?" Like any behavioral problem, authorities and lay people alike have varying methods. With all the programs and information available to a parent or caregiver, the question becomes, "How does one find a program that actually works?"

A child with autism or severe behavioral problems can be helped. And, they can lead a happier, fuller life. It comes down to addressing the situation as early as possible in the child's formative life. There are numerous ways for choosing the right program to address autistic children and kids with severe behavioral problems.

1. Find a program that specializes in dealing with children with autism (contact your local Department of Health).

2. Choose a program that addresses helping children with autism from the parent's or caregiver's perspective (There are many programs to choose from, do your research).

3. Use a program that deals with the problems early on in the child's development (You can obtain free services if your child is under three). It is extremely important to start early.

4. Locate a practitioner who uses methods like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Play Therapy, or Teacch).

5. Pick a counselor who will teach how to modify, as well as diagnose, problem behavior (Check with your local Department of Health, or your insurance company).

6. Use a program that helps the child to improve their test scores, better their study habits, increase their communication skills, improve their memory, and elevate their self confidence.

You can research any of the items above by:

€ The internet is loaded with information, just type in Autism Therapy and you will obtain plethora of information.

€ The library has numerous books on this topic and it is free. The best way is to ask your librarian for help and they will lead you in the right direction.

€ Contacting your local school for more information. The school is a great resource to use and they are very helpful. When you call, ask for the Special Education or the District Office.

The goal for any program should be helping the child to reach their potential through maximizing their self-esteem. The more an autistic child can effectively express themselves and be understood by others, the fuller the life they can lead.

Good Luck!!
