A list of UK, Australia, and worldwide schizophrenia resources

There is a variety of schizophrenia relevant English language resources based on different countries. Many mental health organizations have local chapters. Also hotline or crisis intervention resources are usually organized at a local level. In light of this the schizophrenia resources will be organized according to the country so that residents of a specific country can easily find their way to local help and support.

This article presents a list of the UK and Australian based resources. A separate article presents the North American (US and Canada) based resources.

If you are interested in more general knowledge about schizophrenia there is no need to limit your search for information to your own country. Schizophrenia is mostly the same across different English-speaking cultures and countries, but there are differences on how people approach and manage schizophrenia in the US compared to Canada compared to UK compared to Australia. You might actually find that you are learning more by seeing what people from other parts of the world have to say about it.

UNITED KINGDOM

Schizophrenia - NHS Choices: the NHS is the world’s largest publicly funded health service. The website has high quality educational materials freely available to the public.

Rethink Mental Illness is a mental health services and support-group based UK organization providing expert information and advice for people with mental health issues.

Mind is a UK-based mental health charity that offers crisis online/phone support, high quality educational materials,and in-person local support for UK residents with mental health problems. In addition Mind provides policy lobbing for mental illness.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCP) is the professional UK psychiatric organization. The site provides good quality educational resources for the general public.

AUSTRALIA

SANE Australia  is a non-profit organization which works to decrease stigma and discrimination as well as improve the treatment for Australians with mental illness. SANE provides educational resources as well as well as recommendation for best practices in mental health.

ReachOut.com is an internet service for young people that provides educational resources and support about mental health issues with the goal of improving resilience, coping skills, and promote help-seeking behavior.

headspace provides high quality educational resources and support for children and young people with mental health, drug and relationship issues. Young people can get online and telephone support or in-person support through local headspace centers.

Lifeline is a non-profit organization that provides educational resources for people with mental health issues as well as on online and Telephone Crisis Support service in Australia and New Zealand. Phone # 13 11 14 (Australia)

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) is the professional Australian and New Zealand psychiatric organization. The site provides a “guides for the public” section with good quality educational materials available as free PDF downloads.

WORLDWIDE

Open the Doors is a global program developed b the World Psychiatric Association with the goal to fight the stigma and discrimination associated with schizophrenia. The site provides educational two types of educational resources: for the general public and for professionals.

World Fellowship for Schizophrenia and Allied Disorders (WFSAD) is a global grassroots organization committed to helping people with schizophrenia and their families.

Center for International Rehabilitation Research Information and Exchange (CIRRIE) aims to facilitate sharing knowledge between rehabilitation researchers all over the world.

Schizophrenia Research Forum (SRF) is online community of scientists discussing research aimed at better understanding the causes as well as improving the assessment and management of schizophrenia.

ClincalTrials.gov is the largest database/registry of clinical trials. While run by the US National Institutes of Health the site provides worldwide up-to-date information on clinical trials for schizophrenia. The site provides information for patients and families interested in finding out or participating in a schizophrenia research project in their area.
