How to Reset Simplex 5000 Lock Combination
- 1). Remove the lock from the door. This is a two-step process, which involves removing the outer portion of the lock (the part with the push-button panel) as well as the inner portion. First, loosen and remove the four screws located on the inner portion of the lock using a Phillips head screwdriver. Once the screws are removed, you'll now be able to slide the two pieces of the lock off the door.
- 2). Expose the combination chamber. This is a three-step process. First, use your Phillips head screwdriver to loosen and remove the two screws on the base plate, located on the outside piece of the lock (the part with the push-button panel). Next, use the screwdriver to loosen and remove the screws securing the combination chamber assembly; this is basically a piece of material that protects the top part of the combination chamber. Finally, use the screwdriver to loosen and remove the screws holding the dust cover in place (the dust cover is a three-sided piece that protects the back and sides of the combination chamber).
- 3). Recover the old combination. This is the first step to resetting the lock and establishing a new combination. First, rotate the reset cam (this is a circular knob at the bottom of the combination chamber) as far as it will go towards the top of the unit. This will release the five code gears from their proper alignment with the L-shaped legs (all these components are located vertically on one side of the combination chamber). Examine the code gears; each should now be aligned at a slightly different distance from its corresponding L-shaped leg. Find the code gear that has moved furthest away from its L-shaped leg. This is the first number in the combination, so if it's the third code gear from the top, that means the number "3" is the first combination number. Press the key stem (a button adjacent to the code gear and L-shaped leg) using a flat head screwdriver; this will move the gear head back to its original alignment with the L-shaped leg. Now, locate the code gear that is the second furthest away from its L-shaped leg; this is the second number. Press that numbers corresponding key stem. Continue the process until you've got the entire combination in place. If a code gear did not move away from its L-shaped leg at all when you rotated the reset cam, then that number is not included in the lock combination.
- 4). Enter a new combination for the lock. First, press the code change button at the top of the combination chamber. Next, rotate the reset cam in the exact same way as described in Step 3. Now, press the key stem buttons in the order of your new combination. For example, if you want your new combination to be 5-3-1, first press the bottom-most key stem, followed by the third-lowest key stem and finally the top-most key stem. You do not have to use all five key stems in your new combination. Locate the slider button at the bottom of the combination chamber (at the very base of the unit, below the reset cam). Press it upward; this will set the new combination. Rotate the reset cam back into its original position.
- 5). Reinstall the chamber assembly, which you disassembled in Step 2. Reverse the steps in Step 2 to properly reinstall all three components.
- 6). Reattach the inner and outer portions of the lock to the door. Reverse the directions from Step 1 to properly reattach the lock to the door.
- 7). Test your new combination to make sure it works. If it doesn't, repeat Steps 1 through 6. If problems persist, contact Kaba North America for assistance.
