• If you are looking for work in a specific industry---as most people are---start there by searching for your type job. Do general searches for "editor" or "chef" or "registered nurse" or whatever. These searches bring up sites specific to your area of expertise. For example, searching for "editor" brings up job search websites such as JournalismJobs.com, Editor and Publisher and Media Bistro.
  
  

Classifieds

• Go to your local newspaper. While you may not want to pick up a physical copy of the newspaper, on your Internet search engine, type in the paper's name and other publications in your area to bring up lists of newspaper classified ads online. Most newspapers post their print-edition jobs on their websites and some have links with external job search sites such as Yahoo Jobs or Monster. Sometimes it may be hard to narrow the search on these sites to your specific location, and it may be hard to tell if jobs are local if the location is withheld.
  
  

Other Sites

• Online job listings are big business. Companies such as Monster.com specialize in general job searches and offer additional services such as help with resumes and interviewing skills. There are others, too, such as Craigslist. Craigslist is particularly useful because of its pages specific to your area and specific to your profession. For example, if you go to Craigslist and find the city closest to you, you will be taken to a page specific to your area. It has such job listings as Accounting, Art/Media/Design, Marketing/PR/Ad and Medical/Health. Be wary on Craigslist and even Monster.com and other sites because sometimes scammers post their ads there. Be particularly suspicious of "work at home" opportunities. Some of these are valid, but some just want to sell you something.
