Do you want to know how to learn Spanish quicker? In this article you will discover eight things you can do, including using Spanish Flash Cards to learn Spanish quicker.
By using these techniques you will become more efficient at learning and be able to speak Spanish a lot sooner.
1.
Learn how to listen
When you hear English, you don't need to concentrate.
You can hear just some of the conversation and your brain will fill in the gaps.
You can miss the beginning of the sentence and still make sense of it.
When you are learning another language this is not the case.
Your brain cannot fill in the gaps, so you have to concentrate on every word.
This is not a natural thing to do and can be very tiring.
This tip is to learn and practice your listening skills.
Listen to your Spanish DVD and become used to how native Spanish speakers talk.
Listen to their intonation and how Spanish flows.
Listen to how questions sound and how exclamations are made.
Build up your listening skills gradually, from small sound bites to longer conversations.
Podcasts are also a good way to do this.
2.
Learn how to study
For many of us, studying is not a natural thing, especially if you have been away from education for a while.
With today's modern Spanish courses, the teaching methods are far more advanced than you might remember from school.
Knowing what type of learner you are though will help a lot.
Think about what type of learner you are.
You may be a visual learner, who learns better by seeing.
You may be an auditory learner, who learns better by hearing.
You may be a kinesthetic learner who learns better by doing.
Whichever type you are, focus on strategies which are going to be the most useful to your personal learning style.
Also, think about the language tools that help you the most and focus on these.
Do you prefer Spanish flash cards, memory games or word association? Do you prefer writing or listening? Try recording your voice and translating your Spanish back to yourself.
Better still; find a study buddy who you can practice with.
3.
Repeat each new word several times
You will have a lot of new words to learn.
There are several strategies to make remembering vocabulary much easier.
The first might seem boring, but research has shown that you need to use a word three times before you remember it.
If you include it in writer or spoken sentences repeatedly, it will stick.
More advance strategies include mind association techniques.
4.
Speak out loud
You cannot learn Spanish in your head.
This sounds obvious but you have to speak it out loud.
When you encounter a new word, speak it out loud.
You will learn how it sounds and you will remember it better.
Repeat this three times too.
5.
Write it down
Some people, especially visual learns will remember a word if they see it written down.
Write down a word when you hear it.
This will not only help you remember it but help with your written Spanish too.
Remember you will be reading signs, menus, directions, forms and all other sorts of written Spanish documents if you travel to a Spanish speaking country.
A great tip is to make Spanish flash cards for the new words you want to remember.
6.
Look in the mirror
If you watch yourself in a mirror when you speak Spanish, you can practice non-verbal communication.
That is, act out looking sad, happy or mad whilst you practice some appropriate Spanish sentences.
Speaking a language is about communicating with your body as well as with words.
Showing what you mean with your body will get you understood, even if you get some of the words wrong.
Another tip is to make a set of Spanish Flash Cards for "emotion" words and practice them in the mirror.
7.
Allow yourself to make mistakes
At some point you are going to make mistakes.
You don't want to make a fool of yourself but learning Spanish means that you are guaranteed to get it wrong at some point.
Everyone does! No exceptions.
Allow yourself to make mistakes; this is how we learn languages.
You will actually remember the mistake you made and learn the corrected way quite quickly.
8.
Practice Often
You can't cram Spanish; it has to be learnt gradually.
Modern Spanish courses will teach you at an accelerated pace, but always study Spanish for short periods of time.
If you study in half hour blocks you will learn much more effectively than trying to do several hours together.
Don't try to follow an entire course in one evening.
