How to Change the Brakes in Chevy Pickups

104 216

    Removing the Brake Pads

    • 1). Loosen the lug nuts on the driver's side wheel. Do not remove the lug nuts--just make sure they are loose.

    • 2). Raise the driver's side of the vehicle until the wheel is off the ground. You can remove the lug nuts once the wheel is raised.

    • 3). Slide the wheel off the axle. Place the wheel to the side and out of the way.

    • 4). Locate the caliper on top of the rotor. There will be two bolts in the back of the caliper.

    • 5). Remove the two caliper bolts with a socket wrench. Lift the caliper up and off the rotor. If the caliper is stubborn coming off the rotor, tap it with a hammer.

    • 6). Take off the smaller brake pad. It is locked in the caliper and just needs to be pulled off. Take the back pad and turn it around. You will need to use the old brake pad to press in the piston on the caliper.

    • 7). Press the piston back into the caliper with a C-clamp. Position one end of the clamp on the old brake pad and the other end of the clamp on the back of the caliper. Turn the T-handle at the top of the clamp until the piston is fully compressed back into the caliper. Discard the brake pad once the piston is compressed.

    Installing the Brake Pads

    • 1). Press the new pads into the caliper with your fingers. Be sure the larger pad is against the piston. They will click into place if installed correctly.

    • 2). Place the caliper above the rotor and start the caliper bolts. Tighten the caliper bolts once both have been started with the socket wrench.

    • 3). Place the wheel back onto the axle. Start the lug nuts but do not tighten until all the lug nuts are installed. Be sure to tighten lug nuts in an order opposite of each other, meaning if you tighten the top lug nut, tighten the botton lug nut next.

    • 4). Lower the truck to the ground. Pull the jack away from the vehicle.

    • 5). Ensure the lug nuts are tightened. Double-check each lug nut as the lug nuts are easier to tighten when the wheel is on the ground.

    • 6). Repeat the same steps on the passenger's side of the truck. You always want to do the same to one side as the other. This will ensure the pads wear evenly.
