How to Breed Goldbreast Finches

    • 1). Figure out the sex of your zebra finches by visually identifying them. Look at the beak color of a zebra finch. Notice how a male sports a brighter orange beak than the female. See the brilliant orange cheek spots on male finches. Females do not have these markings. Identify patterns on the breast of the male finch and the lack of design on the female.

    • 2). Place a male and female into the cage you wish to start breeding. Give the birds a chance to get along for a month or two before putting a nest box inside their cage to further their chances of producing babies.

    • 3). Avoid spending too much time standing over your finches cage. These little birds see humans as predators and will not feel as comfortable breeding if you look at them a lot. It is best to wait until after the first set of babies arrives.

    • 4). Feed your finches a proper diet. Give them food made from either seed or pellets as a base. Add other types of food including millet, shredded lettuce, hard boiled eggs and sprouts to give them a variety of vitamin-rich foods. See which fruits and veggies your finches prefer.

    • 5). Decide which nest box you want to use. Purchase either a millet or bamboo nest box that completely covers your finches as zebras like to be fully protected. Place nest box into your pair's cage.

    • 6). Provide nesting items for your finches including shredded tissue paper, pieces of burlap and paper other than newspaper.

    • 7). Check after one week's time to see if the eggs have hatched.

    • 8). Let your finch parents raise their babies to ensure overall health of birds. These birds do not need hand feeding or human help unless a baby is repeatedly thrown out of the nest.
