102 29
Zanskar trek is also known as the Chadar trek because it freezes during the winter and forms a sheath of ice all over the river. Chadar trek was once upon a time the only way in and out of Zanskar during winters when all the passes got closed. For many years Zanskar route has been used for trading purposes. It has slowly gained popularity as a trekking route and in a span if few years it has become a sought after trekking destination.

This trek is done in chilling winters when the temperatures are low enough to freeze all your senses. The main highlight of this trek is that it takes you to some of the most unexplored places of the world. It takes you through the village of Lingshed, one of the remotest villages of Ladakh. Ideally the trek begins from Chiling which is just near the Indus, Zanskar confluence. You will trek for 5 to 7 hours every day for around 15 days.

The route transcends through a river valley which is a popular haven for photographers. If lucky you might get to spot some wildlife. But beware, even on an average sunny day, the weathers can fluctuate without warning. The temperatures have known to go up to minus 30 degrees. As the day dies down, the temperature decreases and the climbing/descending become difficult.

Make sure you wake up as early as 8 am and should be up and walking around 9:00 am. The weather in the mornings is bright, sunny and yet chilly. It is always good to trek early in the morning because the suns up and the warmth of the sunrays energise you.

Many do the chadar trek in 15 days. People fly from Delhi to Leh and acclimatise there for a day or two. Leh itself has quite a lot of places to check out. Don't miss the Shanti Stupa, Sangkar Gompa and the early morning breakfasts in the Leh markets. Trek through Sham and stop by at Likir and Alchi monasteries. Hire buses, jeeps to Chiling and Pishu to checkout coppersmith workshops.

Walk through the Deepyokma to Myrakpulu and camp into the village of Nyarak from where you can trek to Lingshed. From here your chadar trek is 5 hours away. Do the trek early morning and then go to Tsomopaldar to Tilatdo, chilling Leh and back to Delhi.

Carry lots of thermal wear, sleeping bags, first aid kid, advised medications and everything else you might need on the trek. Make sure your body is well adapted to the high altitude. Exercise well before the trek. Stay fit and be safe!
