    Nouns

    • A noun refers to a person, place, thing or idea.

      Word Examples:

      Mother (person), school (place), turtle (thing), success (idea)

      Sentence Examples:

      Tell Rebecca to hurry. (Noun: "Rebecca")

      We appreciate your kindness. (Noun: "kindness")

    Pronoun

    • A pronoun replaces a noun in a sentence for quick reference after the noun has been clearly established.

      Word Examples:

      I, you, he, it, me, her, them, some, all, none

      Sentence Examples:

      If we leave now, we won't miss the previews. (Pronoun: "we")

      I told your sister I liked her dress, but she changed her clothes anyway. (Pronouns: "I," "your," "her," "she")

    Verbs

    • A verb expresses an action or state of being.

      Word Examples:

      Run, jump, play, study, enjoy, do, be, can

      Sentence Examples:

      I apologize, but I can't stay long. (Verbs: "apologize," "can't," "stay")

      After studying all week, I am happy to announce I passed all of my exams. (Verbs: "studying," "announce," "passed")

    Adjectives

    • An adjective describes or modifies a noun.

      Word Examples:

      Pretty, sick, sleepy, generous, gigantic

      Sentence Examples:

      What beautiful weather we're having! (Adjective: "beautiful")

      The couple is planning a special vacation for their first anniversary. (Adjectives: "special," "first")

    Adverbs

    • Adverb modify verbs or adjectives to express the way something happens by clarifying when, where, why or how.

      Word Examples:

      Slowly, honestly, completely, especially, quite, very

      Sentence Examples:

      While sincerely honored to be chosen for the award, the actress will be unable to attend the ceremony. (Adverb: "sincerely")

      I often have trouble sleeping away from home. (Adverbs: "often," "away")

    Prepositions

    • A preposition links nouns and pronouns to other words in a sentence, usually by indicating location or position.

      Word Examples:

      Between, before, in, across, from, despite, of, through, to

      Sentence Examples:

      Margaret has finished everything except the invitations. (Preposition: "except")

      The child awoke every hour, hoping to find money underneath her pillow. (Preposition: "underneath")

    Conjunctions

    • A conjunction connects words or clauses in a sentence.

      Word Examples:

      Snd, or, but, so, because, although, unless

      Sentence Examples:

      You may register after today, but you will have to pay a late fee. (Conjunction: "but")

      Veronica felt fine about visiting the doctor until he approached with a large needle. (Conjunction: "until")

    Interjections

    • Interjections are short exclamations expressed along with a thought, sometimes within a sentence itself.

      Word Examples:

      Well, oh, hey, uh-oh, oops, hmm

      Sentence Examples:

      Ouch, that hurt! (Interjection: "ouch")

      That wasn't as difficult as it looked, huh? (Interjection: "huh")
