Plexiglas is an acrylic, plastic sheet. It is weather resistant and stronger than regular glass. Even when broken, Plexiglas will not shard; instead, it breaks into large and relatively dull pieces, making it safer than regular glass. Plexiglas needs to be cut and shaped for its different uses, and there are multiple tools that serve that purpose. - Table saws are large circular saws that make cutting in straight lines simple. With built-in guides, just turn on the saw and slide the Plexiglas along the guide. Let the blade do the cutting. Table saws however are bulky and expensive, making them impractical for homeowners.
- A jigsaw is a small, hand-held alternative to the table saw when cutting Plexiglas. A medium-size blade attaches to the jigsaw and you can manually guide the blade after turning on the jigsaw to cut the Plexiglas into the desired shape. The speed of the blade is an important factor to consider when cutting Plexiglas. Too slow of a speed will crack the Plexiglas; too fast risks melting the plastic.
- In order to start your cut from anywhere on the Plexiglas with the jigsaw, you will need to drill a pilot hole to start. A power drill with a step drill bit is perfect for this. The step drill bit will allow you to drill any size hole without running the risk of cracking the Plexiglas.
