    • Dental crowns are made of porcelain, metal or a combination of both and are created in a laboratory. Crowns are cemented or pinned to the bones behind the gums. Typically, dental crowns last from seven to 40 years. Routine dental care, injury to the mouth and the overall health of the person determine how long a crown stays in place.

    Save the Crown

    • When a dental crowns fall out, you should save it inside a plastic bag and take it with you to the dentist. If it is not too damaged, the dentist may be able to cement it back into your mouth. If it is damaged, a new crown will have to be crafted to replace the old one. The cost to re-cement the crown in place is a fraction of the cost to replace it.

    Temporary Crown

    • The dentist may need to insert a temporary crown while the new crown is being made. Depending upon the severity of the damaged or decayed tooth, additional enamel shaving might be necessary to fit the new crown in the mouth.
