Do-It-Yourself Flagstone Patio
- There are two methods for constructing a flagstone patio. One method is known as the wet method in which the flagstones are set in concrete. And, the second method is known as the dry method in which the flagstones are set in sand. The dry method which is the easiest and least expensive of the two.
- You must first determine the size and placement of your patio. Once you know this, all you need to do is measure and mark off the area of the proposed patio with staking and string. Most patios are square or rectangular and can be marked with a stake in each corner of the square or rectangle. However, if you are doing a free-form (such as a kidney shape) you will need to mark the area with spray paint.
You will need to excavate the staked off patio area to a depth of 4 inches. This will allow for 2 inches of sand and the height of the flagstone. To make sure that the area is level, put a plank across the excavated area and place a level on the plank to determine if you need to add or remove any soil.
Place landscaping fabric over the leveled patio surface. This will suppress any weeds once the patio is completed. Now you are ready to shovel the sand over/into the prepared patio surface. Once again checking to make sure that the area is level. - No two pieces of flagstone are alike. Their sizes and shapes vary, which is a a challenge when you are piecing them together to form your patio. As you put the flagstones in place, tamp them down into the sand with a rubber mallet. After each flagstone is placed, check it to make sure it is level.
The stones will settle and you may find that you will have to add some sand to keep your patio level.
